The Big Blob

According to http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/05/090526171813.htm, there is a dripping blob under the Great Basin

Parts of the lithosphere have sunk into the upper mantle and formed a blob of materiel below Nevada. The blob is caused by the lithosphere dripping into an area, where it builds up and hardens.

World's Biggest Tsunami

On June 9th, 1958 there was an earthquake along the Fairweather Fault in the Alaska Panhandle that loosened about 40 million cubic yards of rock above the northern shore of Lituya Bay. The rock fell from about 3000 feet into the waters of Gilbert Inlet. The impact started a local tsunami that crashed against the southwest coastline of Gilbert Inlet. It was so powerful that hit the land that seperates Gilbert Inlet from the main body of Lituya Bay. The wave continued down the entire length of Lituya Bay. The force of the wave removed all the trees and vegetation from as high as 1720 feet above sea level. This was the highest wave ever known.

San Andreas Fault

The San Andreas Fault is a sliding boundary between the Pacific and North American plates. It cuts California into two pieces from Cape Mendocino to the Mexican border. It is a transform fault. The plates slowly move past each other, a couple inches a year. For a few years the plates will be locked in place and won't move and push against each other. The build up strains and breaks the rock along the fault. The breaking rock sends waves in all directions. The waves feel like the waves from an earthquake. In places like Carrizo Plain and the Olema Trough you can easily see the fault as scraps and pressure ridges.

Science Daily Article

In this article, found at http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/04/090429132256.htm is about how new studies at the Scripps Istitute of Oceanogrophy show that the Lake Tahoe region of the United States may be due for a major earthquake.

Many different tests, showing how often a level 7.0 earthgquake occurs in the Lake Tahoe region, states that the area is overdue for a large earthquake. the studies are showing that a major earthquake happens once every 2000 to 3000 years, and that the last earthquake of that size was over 4000 years ago.

Different studies show that if an earthquake of the predicted size were to hit the region, Lake Tahoe could give off tsunami waves 10 to 33 feet in height, which could prove to be a very difficult situation to communities on the shore of the lake.

ScienceDaily Article

The link to the page is http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/05/090512093254.htm

What this article is about is that charcoal is about three times worse for the environment than liquid-petroleum-gas. It has been proved that the efficiency of charcoal is 20-35 percent. In contrast, LPG has an efficiency rate of greater than 90 percent.

Also, LPG cookers have been deemed more conventional, being that they have power swithces and power levels for cooking. Charcoal cookers have no such options, and do not necesarily have the ability to regulate fuel consumption.

My Extra Blog

Hi every one this is Kara. I just realized that I havent been titling any of my blogs i dont think except for like one. I also realized that I bloged once on the wrong account so Mr. Welton when your checking keep that in mind

Ok so here's a summery of an article on sciencedaily.com

http://www.sciencedaily.com/articles/c/climate.htm (article)
I chose this article on climate because i thought it would work being that we just finished a climate unit.

CLimate is the average weather recorded over a large time-span. Weather is events that happen in the atmoshpere in a specfic place. Climate is overall. The factors that determine climate are latitude, altitude, proportion of land to water, and distance from oceans and mountains.
THere are more dynamic climates too. For example: The thermohaline circulation of the ocean gives energy from heat between the equatorial and polar regions; other ocean currents do the same between land and water on a bigger scale.
The amount of vegetation coverage has an affect on solar heat and how much it absorbs, water retention, and also rainfall.
Changes in the amount of greenhouse gasses determines the amount of solar energy the planet can hold which basicly leads to global warming or even global cooling.
There are many factors which determine climate and some are very, very complex. But now there is a general agreement as to what they are. Although it is very possible that we find more factors in the near future!

WOw!!! ok theee eeeennnddd ill be bak tomorrow to blog about the real weather!!! :D

may 7th by sam

so i was suppose to blog sunday but i was in AZ soooooooooooooooo im blogging today.

Earthquakes in Sumatra are caused by the Indian plate moving into the Asian plates, which also caused the himalayas to form. if the entire region is not taken up by a fault slip during an Earthquake, then a deficit occures until the next one. This is because of the asperites along the plate boundary. But, layers of coral reefs appear where there is a major Earthquake, and if it is up or down states when an Earthquake was.  so we can determine when another Earthquake comes by finding the asperity locations they may be able to make more accurate assumptions of the Earthquake time.

Today is really nice outside and the playground for lower school is almost finished. Today during mentoring we had a study hall but during English we had a poetry workshop and Mr. Higgins a college professor came and taught us a little more about poetry and we played some psychology games and wrote a poem about our worst fear of turning into something... and lets just say there were some interesting things people came up with.

Today's Earthquake Fact- The Hawaiian Islands are the tops of gigantic volcanoes that formed above a hot spot in the Earth's interior. As the volcanoes grew, they were carried away from the hot spot as the Pacific Plate moves northwestward at about 3 1/2 inches per year.

Yesterday in class we watched a VERY old movie about the climates in the USA. It was really short, about 13 minutes. Mr. Welton also gave us a lecture,  and the computer didn't break down for a while, so we got lucky. The homework was the humidity map worksheet due
monday.

Luck of the Irish!

Hello everyone and happy St. Patrick's day. It is extremely hot outside, a whopping 83 degrees but you never know it may be even warmer in other places because I live farther away than everyone else from other peoples home. It is pretty humid outside but not too bad. There isn't any wind the last time i checked. It is bright, sunny and clear and I am sad to be doing this inside and not outside. Even if you don't like going outside, it is a great day to walk your dog, go to the park, or just walk around your block. It is 5:22 on March 17, 2009 and i'm Max. Happy St. Patrick's day.

Hey!
Today was a really nice day outside! It was sunny with a high of 72 degrees and a low of 50. Tomorrow is also supposed to be nice. Humidity is about 54%. That was today's weather. Perfect day to go outside and play!

In class today we continued to watch 6 degrees, a movie on how global warming might effect our planet. Personally, I found it depressing that all these things are happening to our planet. I think we really must try to stop creating so much Co2. Also, there is a  packet on chapter 4.1 due tomorrow on climates.

High Tempurature around the globe in February!

February of 2009 has been the ninth warmest February for the globe since 1880. This article talks about the highest temperatures in February and the highest temperatures in a Boreal Winter. Also, global highlights for February. One highlight is that in the United Kingdom, on February 2nd, a storm brought large amounts of snow that stopped transportation. This is a highlight because the UK got 12 inches of snow and it was the most snow they have gotten in 18 years! In conclusion it has been a pretty interesting February this year.

Why some people ont heed Tornado and other severe weather warnings

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/03/090310115809.htm

This article talks about why some people dont find shelter during a tornado warning. After the tornado NOAA’s National Weather Service talked to the survivers and found out that two thirds of the victims were in mobile homes or did not have access to a safe shelter. But most of the survivers found the safest shelter that was available to them. To find out more on the article please click on the link above. Planes and Weather

http://www.sciencedaily.com/videos/2007/1209-planes_improve_weather.htm

this video talks about how planes can be useful for predicting the weather. they gather data from a device called "TAMDAR". this device detects moisture in the air which helps predict storms and precipitation. not only does TAMDAR detect moisture it also detects humidity, temperature, ice, turbulence and wind which again helps meteorologists predict the weather.

This article gives a brief overview of how supercomputers take weather data and make weather predictions. There is a larger explanation of this at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Numerical_weather_prediction. This article gives an expanded definition of what a forecast model really is and how the supercomputers manipulate data sets and uses them to make the predictions.

Today it was really cold. There was also a lot of snow outside. Where I was staying, there was around 5 inches of snow but you all probably live much farther away from me and may have had more or less. The temperature was approximately in the 20's or 30's. There wasn't a lot of wind but it was still pretty windy.
Today is the day after Jacob's birthday. Happy birthday Jacob!! We didn't have too much homework this weekend. I am in a different class than most of you but if you are in my hebrew class you will know to finish up the project and to make it look cool. Also, for science you gotta do RNV for 3.3 and that is all that I know of.

Saturday's Blog

On Thursday's class, we did a lab on the movement of hurricanes. We tracked a unpredictable hurricane through various latitudes and longitudes. We were also assigned a project, The Weather Tomorrow. Our homework was to get four maps of the USA, on for Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. All of these maps should include isobars and temperature.
WEATHER TIME!!!
Friday evening and early Saturday morning, it snowed, about 3 inches! The high was 29 degrees, and the low was 13! However, there was a strong wind chill, so it felt a bit cooler than that.

Friday February 13, 2009

Today we had no school :). I am guessing we all had fun today and  all that stuff. For homework all of the people in adon altshull's class have to read saif 33 pages 29-31 and write the verbs that talk about history stuff. We also have 7-2 homework for the people who are in Mrs. Pellman's second period class.
It was 40 degrees today but feels like its 35 :(. It is currently hailing the size of little snowflakes where I am living but i live way out in kansas city missouri so it will probably be different for most other people. There is a strong wind. It is so strong that the street lights are moving back and forth. It is cloudy.

Alex's post February 12

Today we watched a movie on Darwin's theory of evolution. We also had chocolate cake and cookies (thanks Mr. Welton :) All of this was in celebration of Darwin's birthday today, he just so happens to be turning 200 today.
We discussed how humans and apes both came from the same species and watched, as Mr. Welton said, "animal p*rn". Our project on recording weather data for two weeks is still going on and Mr. Welton will bring us data for the 4 day weekend when we get back.
Today it was cold outside!  Right now it's 41 degrees F, but it feels like 38. There were a few puffy clouds this morning, and there was no precipitation. Humidity is 50%, though. There is a 5 mph wind going NE. That is today's weather, and my blog!

Today is Monday, February 9, 2009
It is 9:00 p.m.

Today at 2:00 we had a Tu B'Shevat (birthday of the trees) fair. It had many fascinating projects about cleaning up our school to Global Warming. They all talked about how we can clean up our school and the community and what we can try to do to help the environment and reduce our carbon footprint. One activity that we had was paper making. Kids got to make a bookmark with a poem on it out of recycled paper.
Well anyway....
The weather...
  • Today started off stormy and the wind was very strong.
  • This morning it was 53 degrees but it felt like 43. The humidity was 78% and the wind was coming from the East, Southeast at 24 miles an hour.
  • The day ended very warm and sunny but still very windy.
  • This afternoon it was 66 degrees but it felt like 62. The humidity was 41% and the wind was coming from the South at 22-26 miles an hour.
